In a period of Dave Hughes-inspired anger, I think I'm about to lose it. I have just received comments back from a large chapter, one which I thought was almost the best. Unfortunately, there are more than 85 things still wrong with it, according to my supervisor. All my hopes and dreams of being rid of this thing are continually shattered, and I ...

Today marks 500 days since I officially began writing my thesis. Notice that I didn't say that I've been writing for 500 days, because there are some weekends in there when I didn't do any writing. I really had hoped to have submitted before the big 500, but alas, yet again, the dream has died. In fact, when I mentioned to one of my supervisors ...

I'm sorry to say, but today marks my 4 1/2 year mark of being a PhD student. And I am even sorrier to say today that my scholarship expired. So, I'm going to be 'roughing it' until I can find any sort of employment, the search for which is still being unfruitful.
I submitted my nomination of examiners form this week, so that should be on its way ...

Today I have been offered a sort of payback. We're (my supervisors and I) up to filling out the nomination of examiners form. SupA decided to take the initiative and start filling it out as best he could. Then he emailed it to me and asked for my comments. Well, normally he is the one who gives comments to me. Here was my chance to put some red ...

Well, I've spent all week dealing with my supervisor's comments on my penultimate chapter, as well as rejigging my concluding chapter a little. The hardest part was probably dealing with the 'rewrite' comment of the conclusion to the penultimate chapter. I started again from scratch, and I am fairly pleased with the results...whether my supervisor ...

Today, instead of making any instantly-recognisable progress on my thesis, I've spent many hours playing Squish. No, it's not really a fun game. Note that it is typically played using LaTeX. I'm not sure whether it adapts easily to Word. Here are the rules:
1. Your supervisor will usually initiate a game of Squish. A typical ...

Here's a slightly funny written comment from my supervisor I thought I'd share. A lot of their comments lately have been about choice of words and not sounding formal enough with my language. Their first language is not English, but they are not happy with mine because I get comments that this is ''unprecise''. Chuckle, chuckle. Of course, I ...

It would be really great if someone would invent a thesis detergent. You know, something to get rid of those annoying marks they always seem to pick up when they go off to visit with the supervisor. I mean, you send it off to them all nice and clean, with sparkling white margins. Then a few days later they come back via Information Superhighway ...

(a small diversion - has anyone else ever confused the beginnings of the songs ''Under Pressure'' by Queen and ''Ice Ice Baby'' by Vanilla Ice? 'Cause I have...)
Well, I've just finished a meeting with my supervisors. The first piece of news was that one of our potential examiners has left on summer holidays (he's from the northern hemisphere) ...

Following my previous Tom Cruise movie-themed post, I'm writing this short entry to highlight how difficult this Friday's meeting with SupA is going to be. I have just received comments on a chapter back from him. There are aproximately 100 things to deal with in 20 pages. Trying to deal with 100 things in 60 minutes will be virtually ...
