Caveat

I've noticed many theses seem to include some kind of caveat in the preface or elsewhere early on. I've found I don't quite know where I sit with them, so here is a loose rambling on about exceptions and clauses... "Such-and-such is beyond the scope of

I wrote almost 2000 words today. Happy dance!

It all started with me first being able to squeeze out a hundred words or so yesterday. I'm starting a new chapter so it's all weird and scary at the moment and I have no real structure to work with yet. As I agonised with the lack of existing structure,

Brief update

My family headed over to the US to meet relatives a few months ago, and a local newspaper published this article about their travels (the image quality isn't fantastic): The Great Michigan Tour of '08 On my thesis front: not much going on at the moment,

Need to stay focused?

Behold, some advice on staying motivated on past/long term projects. The bit about writing-down-your-ideas has, in admittedly a different format and context, kickstarted me in my thesis work after four consecutive semesters of teaching/procrastinating.

Oh my god, it's alive!

After briefly flirting with the idea of setting up at blogger, I've decided to revive my trusty Procrastinatrix. Perhaps if one day I really desperately want more people to read my insights and insipidity (is that a real word? it should be) I'll migrate,

I'm back!

...but not yet in this time zone. I've been out of town for three months, of which six weeks were dedicated to sitting in libraries reading. I might get back into blogging soon. As soon as I figure out how to sleep during the nights.

Well, I think it's a good idea.

(Bear with me, it might take a while for me to reach my point.) *A while back there was some talk here on MRS about the viva/oral defence of theses and why it wasn't necessarily the best or easiest thing for Australian students (not least because we're

Status report

Now, just because I have failed miserably at staying away from the computer after 10pm doesn't mean I'm useless at all other pursuits. It's October the eighth and I have written over 6000 words, so i'm not doing too badly. I was perhaps a bit ambitious

Personal Thesis Writing Blitz

Right. Project: write thesis. Sensible advice: break project down into smaller, more manageable bits. Create to-do list. Pledge: write one thousand words every day during October. Then make them make sense. Along the lines of NaNoWriMo , but with a thesis

It's the little things that (I hope) count

Sky's post made a little inspiration kick me in the head: "Hey, how about you collect some tips and ideas on approaching research/work in a sensible way and actually apply them to your own life ?". This is also partly driven by a rather conscious effort

Crazybusyaaaagh

That about says it. Tuesdays are my "running around being late for everything falling over myself tired because I haven't had time to eat" -day. This is really just a quick update to inform anyone who reads this blog that I am, in fact, still alive and

All the Wonderful Things I've Done

It has been a while since I posted properly, methinks, so I thought I should perhaps give a bit of an update on Being Me. Teaching The semester is in full swing. Tuesdays are exceptionally busy - I have a Limina meeting at 11, and because I'm not organised

Do the Happy Dance!

I gave my second-semester lecture today, hurraah for me! It was a two-hour long lecture-workshop, where interspersed with lecture-y bits the students discuss particular topics in small groups. Overall I think it went okay, still speaking a bit fast I

A Day in the Life: Red Eye

Well, after some computer problems and brain malfunctionings I stopped work and any pretensions that I was being productive around five. At sevenish, after Ben had popped home quickly before fencing, I started listening to a radio discussion on Kaurismaki,

A Day in the Life: Tea break

Well, not that I'm having tea yet, but plan to, as soon as I send this off. So far I have, of course, done nothing about my thesis. I have instead been doing some research (finding articles but not actually reading them) for my teaching research project,
