It has a cool name, but that's it

Confession: I've never been able to figure out what's supposed to be so bad about Microsoft. I don't get any of the "Windows crashing"-jokes. Sure, I've had computer problems. Sometimes I want to set this damn thing on fire. But I've never been convinced that somehow it's all Bill Gates' fault - or that any other operating system would be any better. Still, maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough as a user to realise I'm getting a raw deal?

On a slightly related topic, a couple of weeks ago my sister installed Firefox as a default browser on our computer. Now, not being a tech whiz myself, and remembering compared-to-me-at-least-master-computer-genius-Tama making some passing reference to the magnificence of Firefox, I was intrigued. I had never had any great problems with trusty Explorer, but figured possibly Firefox will change my life. Perhaps this was my chance to see how easy and user-friendly life was on the more streetcreddy side of information technology.

Bollocks.

Firefox, so far, sux. The amount of times it's just stopped working astonishes me. Yes, okay, the "recover last session"-option can be useful (but only because it keeps failing in the first place!), and I am quite enamoured with opening new tabs instead of windows. But those are poor trade-offs for the fact that I have to keep restarting it. It also irritates me that I can't just look up PhD comics in my Favourites, flick forwards to the most recent entry, and replace the old favourite with this newer installment in the archives, making it easy for me to find where I left off even after weeks of not looking it up and read new comics in chronological order (this is muy importante, or Slackenerney graduates before you realise he even has a child to support). No, Firefox creates a new Bookmark for each new archived entry, rather than replacing the old one. I end up with a dozen PhD-bookmarks that all look the same. I don't think anyone should be expected to live like this.

All in all, it's really rather vexing.

If this is a laptop you're working on, give me ten minutes with you (and it) and I'll convince you it's more than worth your firey time and effort! :)
