Join us! Become a bride!

Brides have fun! Brides wear pretty dresses! Join us! Join us now!

As a bride you can expect to find yourself in a variety of exciting situations, learning fantastic new skills, such as

  • differentiating between olive, apple, sage and pistachio green, as well as hunter and teal
  • learning many intriguing ways to spell (and pronounce) bonbonniere...bombonnerie...bomboneeries... um, favors
  • developing endless neuroses as to whether you should consider the misogynistic origins of some traditions or just incorporate them regardless
  • worrying whether planning a low chignon when a bridal magazine tells you it's the "new half updo" is being intuitively fashion conscious ("I thought of it before the magazine appeared!") or tremendously sheep-like and, in years to come, instantly identifiable as "sooo 2007"
  • chuckling visciously when a "real couple" feature page suggests how you could make yor special day look exactly like Brad Pitt's and Jennifer Aniston's!
  • worrying about telling your fellow bride about your great new invitation idea, because she might try to steal it
  • feeling that as much as you want to involve your partner in important decisions, you're not quite confident that he'll have the right opinions
  • beginning to evaluate your friends according to how they'll make you look in comparison - and deciding to not invite the pretty ones
  • honestly believing your choice of ribbon will really matter in the greater scheme of things

See, it's all glorious fun! Come, be one of us!

I'm not ready to become one of the bride horde yet, but I am being co-opted as an apprentice (bridesmaid). One of the major areas of debate for that wedding is whether the groomsmen are allowed bare chests - it's a beach wedding. The Bride is lobbying for no.

My sister, as my maid-of-honour, called me a couple of months ago to ask for my permission to cut her hair - you know, to see whether my plans required her to have long hair. I'm not quite sure how I should react to my nearest and dearest expecting me to go all bridezilla about everything...

One of the oddest things I've found about the whole wedding circus is that quite a few brides will insist on keeping their dress a secret from dear-mister-husband-to-be, but the poor man rarely has much say over what he himself is going to wear. At the very least the bride will have helped him choose an outfit, if she hasn't dictated it from the start.

Personally I'd say the acceptability of bare-chestedness depends largely on the calibre of the chests. Are the groomsmen more Christian Bale or Jack Black?

I think we're talking Christian Bale (at the moment anyway, but with continual postponements it may be Jack Black territory by the time the wedding actually happens!).
