She sits about her acre cultivating 100,000 words (8,6)

While some are doing manly chores I like to spend the weekend doing cryptic crosswords.

To make it easy for you, here's another clue for the same answer:

Racists here? He's worriedly writing the volume (8,6).

research field?

"Research (something)" anyway is my bet...

The answer to these clues is "research thesis". The two clues I gave both fall into the easiest category of crytic clues, namely clues that contain an anagram of the answer.

Generally, a crytic clue is alpha-numeric. The alpha part (the words) encode the answer in at least two ways, and it's either the very beginning or the very end that gives you the answer explicitly. The numeric part (the numbers) tell you how many words and how many letters you are looking for. (Obviously it didn't help that I put the wrong numbers here, but they are now correct!)

So here's how these two clues work:

We know instantly we are looking for two words, of length 8 and 6, so 14 letters in total.

"She sit about" (about could be code for "re" or for an anagram) "her acre cultivating" (here cultivating could mean making or composing, thus an anagram) "100,00 words" (obviously the answer - a research thesis). "research thesis" is an anagram of "she sits her acre"

The second clue is easier. "Racists here? He's worriedly (an anagram) writing the volume" (the answer is the volume, research thesis, which is an anagram of "racists here he's". The punctuation is ignored.

Another clue next weekend.
