Grad School Email Accounts

Google are offering a service in which they will host email for educational users. The email address would be <student>@grs.uwa.edu.au but underlying it would be the standard gmail account with 2GB of storage space.

Do you think this is something that UWA Graduate Students (i.e. you) would be interested in if this was offered? The benefit to you as a student is that it would be identifying you as a graduate student at uwa. The possible negative (depending on your point-of-view) is that the email is hosted by Google.

I think this sounds like a good idea, the current system where we are given a very unfriendly university based student email address really isn't very good.

The main problem I have with the current ones is that they are more or less impossible for people to remember and they tend to get printed wrong a lot. I've been to 2 conferences so far in my PhD and both times the list of conference attendees has had my email address with a mistake in it. So assuming there was someone who wanted to contact me from either of those conferences they wouldn't have been able to.

Would it really be all that difficult to have this type of email address available to postgrads through the uni though?
