Someone Else's Election

Published 08 November 06 03:49 PM
Coming from a family where teenage rebellion translated to screaming matches over the dinner table about whose interpretation of current political events was correct (old school Labour vs Just Watch How Left I Can Go), I still follow politics and current events with that same mix of avid fascination and over-identification, and total nausea. So today, like in 2004, I've sat with the CNN website in the corner of my computer screen and hit refresh every five minutes. And while I still don't fully understand the American voting system (or at any rate, the logic behind some of it), today seems to have had a more hopeful outcome even without resorting to Wonkette's Midterm Election Drinking Game.

Now it is time to disconnect from the interweb - though watching too much ABC remains an option - and try for a full day of writing enabled by the No Contact With The Outside World (TM) tactic.

The one thing I do sort of envy about the US is that their elections are A BIG DEAL. People actually feel affected by the result, there's showmanship, there's confetti, there's scandal and propaganda. Australia's elections are just... beige (to approapriate Billy Connolly, that great political commentator of our time).

I would really hate to see Australia's political system fall into a heap and become the American one... I cannot stand the falseness and the corruption in it. I see the America (USA) as the modern Roman Empire... but that is another story.

I must admit thought that I was glad to hear that the democrats took control of the American House of Representatives, it means that now Bush's powers will be reigned in and he is less likely to do something silly, like provoking WWIII. Lets hope the Democrats gain the American Senate too. Perhaps we may even see America's first female president in two or so years time...
